Christmas in the Mexia Paper: 1950 - 1954

Looks like I made it through half a century of Christmas picking through every year to 1954 before I just ran out of time this season. 

 By the middle of the century, car advertisements take over a lot of real estate on the pages and December was the big reveal month for the coming year's models.

 Strangely, this period is when the paper stops publishing Santa letters, sadly. Too much baby boom. 

 But in 1954, the paper announces they will begin publishing many more local photographs, so I pulled as many of those I could find from the month of December.

Life was pretty exciting in Mexia in 1922, as long as you managed not to get killed.  The headlines on Monday, January 9 are inextricably linked. The oil boom had brought with it, as always, the rush of money and people rushing to chase the money. 1921 had seen the town population swell exponentially. The New Year of a Century Ago in Mexia

A century ago, the New Year 1919 had a touch of momento mori going on. Happy New Year  . ..  IF YOU SHOULD DIE? (double underlined for effect) most of the films have been lost to time but not Bears & Bad Men! (features an early Stan Laurel) Wright Kincheloe's letter to Gray Forrest from the prior month was published on the front page as well, regarding his last half of 1918's WWI movement A good bulk of the pages were focused on the returning soldier

January 5 - 6, 1922 General Pershing Visits Mexia

The Mexia Oil Boom and its influx of capital brought a myriad of improvements to the town, very quickly. It brought a lot of other stuff that wasn't so pleasant, to be sure, but that's not the subject of this post. One of the primary issues of the day was the condition of the roads.  The roads even in dry conditions were rough going for those tiny little tires on the 1920s automobiles.  But when it would rain heavily, everything was bogged down with mud, to the point of paralysis. A few photos shared on  Old Time Mexia Photographs  of the problem illustrates it far better than words: The prior six months, the Mexia papers carried progress of the City's bond issue to begin paving the streets of Mexia. They still hadn't started when Pershing Way was dedicated January 5, 1922 but it was in the works. Pershing Way was the concrete road from Mexia to the clubhouse, which Col. Humphreys paid for and then donated to the city....
