Christmas in the Mexia Paper 1920 - 1924
1920
The boom is just around the corner in December 1920, but it hasn't exploded yet. Col. Humphrey's first well came in on Thanksgiving this week, so there is still much anticipation about how far the prospective oil field might reach.
(Col. Humphreys speaks at a packed house this month. Article below.)
The ads and the circulation of the paper will be part of the boom. By the time we get to 1922, the paper has run through three different printing presses, each larger and capable of more printings per hour. They even create a Christmas edition of the paper with a several page layout of the newspaper offices and paper boys. I'm wondering if the Gibbs Memorial Library might have archived any of these prints, as the newsprint copy is terrible. Anyone in the Mexia area who might be willing to ask, let me know!
Colonel Humphreys at the Knights of Pythias Lodge, December 20, reported in the Dec. 21 edition
"In closing Mr. McGee asked Col. Humphreys to remember that 4,000 people in Mexia looked upon him as their Santa Claus, but, like expectant children on Christmas Eve, they did not yet quite know what to expect on the morrow."
